The Queen Visits Ireland

In honour of Queen Elizabeth's recent historic visit to Ireland, we thought we'd take a look back to the last time an English queen travelled to these shores. The budding amateur photographer, Fonso Carton, captured this image of Queen Victoria's royal entourage as it passed through Blackrock in 1900. Fonso's photograph appears in Cartons of Dublin City & County, the labour of love that his grand daughter Libby produced with her father, Garrett, in 2001.

Opening Minds at the Science Gallery

McCann FitzGerald

The irony of the internet, James Boyle says, is that it was invented for science but is easier to use to search for shoes or books, rather than for carrying out scientific research. Wouldn't it be revolutionary, he suggests, if it really did work for science?

The Secret Life of Books

Anne Mikus

Where do books come from? How do they reproduce? And what exactly has to be done at the birth of a book?

These are just some of the questions Anne Mikus whimsically addresses in "Das Geheime Leben der Bucher", the wonderful children's book on the secret life of books she recently produced together with the designer, Ron Heussen, and the illustrator, Farid Rivas Michel.

Small stage makes it to the big stage

An Grianán Theatre

The auditorium in Athens where the inaugural European Design Awards were held was massive. Hundreds of designers from all over Europe came together to see and hear presentations ranging from the design of controversial new Swiss banknotes to the iconography and aesthetics of the Finnish death metal music scene. Surprisingly, there were more than just a few parallels between those two topics, but that's a story for another time.

On the Coat Tails of Fame

We finally made it to the pages of Eye, the world’s leading publication on everything graphics. Flip to the centrefold spread of the Winter 2009 Berlin Special and you’ll find our names in one of the many soap bubbles drifting away from the design life of Erik Spiekermann.
