Watershed
Every Irish schoolchild learns about the Flight of the Earls, the final departure of the old gaelic order from Irish soil and a significant turning point in the island's complex and troubled history.
In 1607, the Chieftains of the O'Neill, the O'Donnell, and the Maguire clans set sail from Rathmullan on a French ship, hoping to elicit Spanish support for the recovery of their land back in Ireland. A storm forced them ashore in France; and instead of meeting with the support they'd hoped for they became hopelessly entangled in the geopolitics of the time. The Earls died in exile, bringing to an end the ancient Irish order that had survived for nearly a thousand years.
We were proud to be asked to design the posters commemorating the 400th anniversary of this watershed moment in Irish history.
