Plumbers Sinfonia
Who says physicists don't know how to let their hair down and have a good time? A while back an Irish delegation of them travelled to CERN, the particle physics laboratory near Geneva, to participate in "Physics on Stage", a conference on the teaching of physics. To help illustrate their presentation on the physics of sound, they took along with them the Plumbers Sinfonia, a band of physics students playing traditional Irish music on instruments made of WAVIN PVC pipes. In what must be a world first for any academic conference, the audience demanded an encore performance.
We like to think the overwhelmingly positive response was at least partly due to the wonderful motion graphics designed by Dermot Flynn, a Carton LeVert staff member at the time. Although Dermot has since gone on to establish himself as one of the UK's most sought-after illustrators, we still have the occasional opportunity to incorporate his uniquely quirky style in projects running through our studio.
